Entertaining With Apples

Because of my WIP, which has an apple orchard in it, I've been interested in all things apples - especially new recipes. My kiddos love apples, too, though we usually go the traditional route and simply cut them up and put pieces in a bowl to eat. Nothing too exciting.

I wanted to do something more fun with apples, and something for the season. And the kids wanted to help.

So we heard about an idea to make miniature caramel apples and decided to do our own version. If you want something fun and easy to do with the kids, or something interesting to make for a party, you should try this!

Buy a couple of red apples, whichever kind you prefer. Cut them into bite sized pieces. Then you melt some caramel, dip the apples to coat them, and then top them with something of your choice. I used nuts and miniature chocolate chips. You could also use small candies. I poked them with shortened wooden skewers but you could use whatever you like that will hold the apple on and make for easy eating. Refrigerate for a couple hours as well to harden the caramel and keep the topping on.

The kids had fun with these snacks and I also took them to a party not too long ago. They were tasty, easy, and fun to look at.

I love snacks like these, especially if the kids can help make them and they're at least halfway healthy to eat. Do you do anything unique with apples or fruit that you'd like to share?

  1. They sound delicious! I was excited because last night I finally found my favorite apples--McIntosh for sale here. I usually make applesauce but bought only a few and was wondering what to do best with them. I want something not as sweet as yours but still something more than an apple. This is the season for them!

  2. Mmmm...I love the smell of apple. And the taste. My husband loves the really sweet red apples like Jonathans or Red Delicious, and I like the really tart Granny Smiths, but we both love Honeycrisps best.

  3. Sounds good Cindy! I think I'll try these next time as opposed to the big apples--they are so messy and no one ever finishes them around here. ;)

My kids love plain old apple pie!

  4. For halloween made spiders out of apples. I used my slicer but stopped just near the end where the core would be removed. Nipped an inch off the core and then fanned the slices out so that it sat on the plate like legs. With toothpicks I attached two marshmellows for eyes. The ends of my toothpicks were coloured so they created the pupils.

It turned out not too bad for after school snack.

  5. My hubby is a big apple eater. Next to grapes, apples are his favorite fruit. I'm not as fond of them as he is, but when I do crunch into one I prefer a tart Pippin. That variety can be hard to find, though, so when they're in the supermarket, I make sure I get some.

  9. I've been on a major apple kick this fall too, Cindy. The best variety for me is just a fresh apple straight from the fridge (rinsed off first, of course). :)

  12. In my kiddo's second grade class they got like 6 different kinds of apples and had a taste test and voted which ones they liked best. She loved it and I thought it was cool too, because now I pay more attention to the different kinds of apples in the supermarket.
